Well things have been busy around here, although you can’t tell by the crickets on Mateo’s Story! I really miss writing for fun on this blog, so I am going to try to find some more time to dedicate to it.
Just over a week ago, I took the kids for a walk. We have been trying to find time to walk together, with kid’s packed schedules it can be challenging. So we head off down out street and pass the park, and approach the tennis courts.
I do a double take as we approach the courts and see a small black and white dog running inside the tennis courts. She looks frightened and unsure of her surroundings, so the four of us cross the street to take a closer look. She is scared and doesn’t allow Reuben to catch her very easily, but he finally wrangles her in. Two security officers approach and let us know that she has been running on the train tracks. Well there was only one option to bring her home to safety.
Maya has been begging us for a dog for a long time. We have an older dog, but he is very large and great with people, but cannot be around other alpha dogs, which makes him impossible to walk! So we had been looking for a Beagle type or size dog to adopt, a dog that could put up with Mateo’s antics. His loudness, how he’s not always gentle, how he doesn’t really read the signs when someone has had enough. And I was worried that maybe this little dog would not be a good fit.
At first I thought she was a Chihuahua, but her curly tail, very smooth coat and interesting markings reminded me of the Rat Terriers I would see up for adoption. So we took her to the vet to check for a microchip. The vet agreed with my theory that she’s most likely a mix of Rat Terrier and Chihuahua. She had no collar, no microchip. We looked for signs, posted on Craigslist, checked the paper. Still no owner has claimed the little pup.
So we called her Lily. She’s about 6-7 months old. She’s a lot of fun, great with the kids. Becoming much less skittish. I think she’s part of the family now.
What do you think?
